The COVID-19 pandemic and stay-home orders created an uncharted territory for remote work, where many workers had to switch to a new mode of work with minimum preparation. The benefits of remote work were clear, including a more flexible schedule and increased productivity. However, that didn’t mean remote work wasn’t without its challenges. From communication barriers to time zone differences, distributed teams struggled to reach their full potential due to common struggles in remote work. As more people started working from home, casual chats at the water cooler disappeared, and friendships relied on online chats instead. Instead of coalescing units, the teams became scattered.
As the post pandemic situation gradually normalized and organizations started limping back to normal office working conditions they faced a new challenge in their workforce. People habitual of working in remote teams found it difficult to relate to their peers in office environments. Workplace individual silos became a new normal and workplace camaraderie took a hit.
